WORLD POVERTY DAY OCTOBER 17TH 2009

17/10/2009 In view of World Poverty Day, SOS Malta will be carrying out an awareness-raising campaign at the Plaza Shopping Centre in Sliema. This event will run from approximately 10.00 to 13.00 and aims to promote greater awareness on development issues, more specifically the Millennium Development goals (MDGs). In order to generate awareness, SOS Malta will be distributing campaign material and showing a documentary on the TV screens spread around the Plaza. To add to the atmosphere of the event, we will also be using Toons characters/animators to distribute our materials and promote the cause.

World Poverty Day is recognised by the United Nations and takes place every year on 17 October to acknowledge all those people worldwide living in extreme poverty. The observance of this day can be traced back to 17 October 1987. Since then, people of all backgrounds, beliefs and social origins have gathered every year on this day to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor.

This campaign also forms part of a larger awareness-raising initiative undertaken by SOS Malta under two development projects entitled Media Engagement in Development Issues and Promotion (MEDIP) and Save Women's Lives (SWL), both projects funded by the European Commission.

The former project deals with all eight MDGs whilst the latter focuses on MDG 5, thus the improvement of maternal health. SOS Malta has also recently completed another development project concentrating on MDG 7 called ‘Water for Life-Malta'. This formed part of the programme ‘Promoting Development in Europe: Towards a Critical Mass and Beyond' of Minority Rights Group International, also funded by the European Commission. These projects feature among many which are contributing towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and represent a joint effort by the international community to seek to eradicate poverty.

Due to this being an awareness-raising campaign and a day of solidarity, the support of the media and general public would be greatly received at this event.

Digital Postcard Action May 2009

Public awareness raising and advocacy at national and European level, specifically on the theme of reproductive health is necessary to highlight lack of access to family planning and reproductive and sexual health care. Please find above our advocacy messages and through your influential role we are confident that you can help us to reach the general public and political decision makers about the link between reproductive health and poverty reduction.
